A front-page story, an epic hate letter
I had an A1 story in today's paper about how delegates at both national conventions will be using social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.). More on that in a bit.
First, I need to share an amazing, angry letter I got at work, via the snail mails. Go read it and, if you're so inclined, post a comment. I plan to print out the responses (no e-mail was included in the letter) and mail them back to the woman who wrote that I am "a one-dimensional writer." (A Twitter pal pointed out that I write in at least two: width and length.) She also blasted those of us who blog and who use Twitter and other social media tools. We're narcissistic time-wasters, according to her. The letter is fascinating, I think, and has received some great comments from other readers.
Now, back to the A1 thing -- usually when I share stories with friends online, I tell them how I wish they could see the print version because it usually has great artwork and design that didn't make it into print.
This is the rare instance where I think the online version is better. The box I wrote for the story was missing in the print version, no photos ran with the print piece (despite some time I took tracking down mug shots and making sure art was available) and in the end, the story appeared as a small column on the front page and a giant gray box of text on the jump page.
It was on a page with lots of other convention coverage; I understand the story was pretty long and there are limits on space, but... man... I would have been happy to cut some fat from the story to make room for some artwork or the box. Unfortunately, in the daily news section, things move quickly and that's not always possible. Ah well.

Head games
A back-to-school/college gadgets gift guide ran in Sunday's Life & Arts section.
One of the photos that ran with the piece (and at a very large size on the Web site) was this one, for a personal cinema device:
In the future, ALL college students will be required to wear bulky VR goggles! Plug in, look out and tune... sideways.
Not much else going on. I had a sort of restless weekend where I felt like I should be doing something instead of just enjoying the summer. That will soon resolve itself when the fall brings a ton of work that won't stop for a very long time. Working on that whole "Enjoying the summer" thing.
I also posted a short video on Videogamey today. Go check it out.
