Raúl passes
It's gotten to where I have so many online writing obligations every week now (including the addictive, but not particularly productive Twitter posts) that this space has felt a little bare-in-the-cupboards lately.
I feel bad in particular about not posting something sooner on the passing of Raúl Salinas.
He was an amazing person, a true artist. I wrote a profile of him two years ago that I posted in English here. We ran an obit in the paper that unfortunately I wasn't able to write myself (I had a bunch of other stories and projects due and could only pull myself away from them long enough to do the initial short Web site version). I caught up later in the day long enough to write a blog entry, but it doesn't feel like enough. What can you write that is worthy of telling someone's whole life? You can't really. You do your best with the limited space and time you have and hope that you get it all right.
This is the first time someone I knew personally has died since Lilly was born and my first thought was sadness that she'd never get to meet him or that Raúl would never meet her. It was a big, sudden hurt I'd never felt before. I don't know that I'll ever get used to feeling something like that.

Large-scale pimperation
I cannot believe it's already mid-February. Was it not just New Year's? Did we not just turn this 2008 thing on?
Lilly turns six months on Wednesday. My wife does not believe it despite evidence I have presented in calendar, Google Cal and electronic organizer form. She simply thinks that you're supposed to measure these things in weeks, which I suppose is fine for the first few months, but it throws off the whole idea of actual numerical dates. According to my wife, Lilly has been six months old for weeks now, if you count it out by weeks since her birth. "So when do we celebrate her first birthday, then?" I asked.
"We already did."
A number of other things: I watched the Grammys for the first time in years last night, party for the Amy Winehouse soap opera, but mostly because there simply wasn't much else on TV. No Sopranos anymore, no Desperate Housewives for my wife to enjoy. It was boredom, but my girl Amy did well and seemed sober and steady on her feet, which is far more than we could have hoped for.
On to pimpage: a story I wrote from today's paper is on the Web and for some reason it's huge on the front page of statesman.com, which... yay! It's about a martial arts instructor who built his own Web site. I shot and edited the video that goes with it, in which I make extensive use of the "Bong" sound effect.
Videogamey now has a Facebook group. Join in the fun!
A new Smallville recap is up today of the episode with Black Canary:
Fishnet... Black Patent Leather -- D.C. character Black Canary (we've never heard of her either) joins the fray as a conservative columnist and destructive sonic wave-generating fishnet-clad vigilante. She's Ann Coulter if Ann Coulter had any class. Meanwhile, Green Arrow returns to mess around with Lois's heart, and Clark and Lana do The Awkward after she accidentally fell in love with Bizarro Clark.
And I'm supposed to be on NPR one of these days (I recorded a segment Thursday, but no idea when it will air) about the Getting Things Done story that ran a few weeks ago.
I'm also on Tuesdays around 4:30 on KTSA 550 AM in San Antonio, talking about technology.
Whew, that's a lot of stuff. Wish I could just nap like Lilly:
