Inventing a whole new word
A friend of mine who is... not the best speller helped me come up with this:
Hampster -- a hamster inside a hamper that has been thrown in a Dumpster.

Stories, stories, stories
A review I wrote of Xbox Live's Pinball FX ran in yesterday's paper. I've got two big stories running this weekend in Life & Arts -- one about the Star Wars 30th anniversary and the other about Red vs. Blue. I'll post links when they're up.

I must think hard about 'Star Wars'
About two weeks ago, one of our editors asked if I could write something for the "Star Wars" 30th anniversary. He asked me to think of some story ideas and just mull it over and see if I had anything to say about it.
One the one hand, I'm 32 years old. I don't know a 32-year-old guy who doesn't have lots to say about "Star Wars." It's practically in our blood, sloshing around, "Whooshing" in sound like a lightsaber.
But it's been surprisingly hard untangling the twine ball of emotions. I really had major issues with the second trilogy even though I was there, front and center, paying money to see each of them. I've bought the original trilogy DVDs. I recently PVR'd HD versions of "Empire" and "Jedi" when they were on HBO.
Sometimes editors throw you a story that you know nothing about and you have to sort of swim in a sea of ignorance, interviewing people, researching, making yourself a temporary expert on a subject.
What about when you know too much about a subject, when you slept on bedsheets about the subject, when action figures based on the subject figured prominently in your childhood.
Sure, I've fallen away from that. I've never gotten into the books or a lot of the videogames or really immersed myself in the Generation 2.0 of the fandom. I don't visit the Web sites and got most of my prequel advanced info second-hand. I wouldn't even call myself a big "Star Wars" fan these days in the ways of my friends who go to conventions, buy life-sized props, who live it like a religion.
So my head's been a little swimmy with "Star Wars" on the brain lately. I'm wrestling with The Force, my mind on a galaxy far, far away.

Don't You Wanta Phantom?
My last Smallville recap of the season is up on Television Without Pity. It's been a crazy Season Six. I'm thrilled to be on recapper's vacation.
Well, I'll Be Dammed -- Let's pretend to get excited about a season finale for the most inconsistent season of Smallville yet! Woooo! The last Phantom Zoner is on the loose. Lana wants a divorce and is willing to die (or at least fake-die) to get one. MamaKent goes to Washington. Lois gets stabbed, but it helps Chloe discover her nascent Kryptopower. Lex freaks out as his world collapses. And Clark faces off against Bizarro Clark at Reeves Dam, where most of the action takes place. Now if only they could have crammed this much action into the rest of the season.
