The Spanish-langauge newspaper Rumbo is ceasing publication in Austin. Here's the front-page article I co-wrote for today's newspaper.

Oh yeah. Yeah Yeahs.
Look, musically, have I yet steered you wrong?
I don't know how much better I can do than free: you can hear Yeah Yeah Yeah's entire new album, Show Your Bones (due out March 28) on Myspace gratis, holmes.
Check it out.

Islands in the street
Just got back from a short Islands set at Longbranch Inn, but I got there at the start time only to find they were on their last three songs. And since it was at capacity, I only made it inside for the last one.
Luckily the last song was "Abominable Snow," which is on the Terribly Happy '05 CD. So, pretty cool then. I'm not going to make it to their late-night show tonight, but I hear they're visiting Austin again May, so I'll check them out then. And I may get lucky and go to the Ice Cream Man Cream Vintage party tomorrow evening.

Haiku Roy
Back in the Technopolis days (oh, the Technopolis days...), I got to work with lots of great and talented freelance writers, including Kary Anne Roy, who wrote a very funny column about working at an Austin dot-com. (She had to run the column past her bosses before we could run it which always made for some interesting stories in and of themselves.)
She has a site called "Haiku of the Day" and her book Haiku Mama is now available in bookstores. Check her out and wish her well.

That's why I married her, folks
When we were at the Erykah Badu thing listening to jazz after jazz after jazz song (insert solo. Insert other solo. Repeat), Rebecca said, "It's Jazz Times Ten."

My review of Fight Night Round 3 for the Xbox 360, which was to blame for more than a few late, late nights in my house, is up at austin360.

Omar = 'pothetic'
I keep meaning to write about that Erykah Badu show Sunday night. It was a fuckton of jazz until she came out. And, you know, I'm down with jazz, but this was like hours of funky, fusiony 10-minute-sax-and-trumpet solo jazz and I'm not sure I was ready for that.
But Ms. Badu? My God. Amazing. She came out and started with my favorite song of hers, "Green Eyes" and it just got better from there.
Over on the Digital Savant, someone must have posted a link because all of a sudden I've got several comments from people who either hate cell phones, hate me or hate me talking about cell phones. They're mad, but I don't think it's just me they're mad at. Could it be a Luddites forum that linked? A Web site for people who can't spell or make a point? I don't have referral logs for Savant so I have no idea where they came from, but watch out! They're pissed!
